Realisation
The
final delivery of the Project began in the summer of 2005 with the
installation of the environment at a primary school. With the support
of staff, parents and colleagues, Alex was able to oversee the
transformation of a classroom into a sensory classroom for children on
the autistic spectrum. Having developed and tested digital prototypes
and made environmental design decisions based on his observations, this
was the first opportunity to bring all of these aspects together. The
environment was created from the floor upward with as many of the
design recommendations taken into account as budget would allow for.
The process was documented through photography and notes as part of the
action research.
Following the primary work, digital equipment was purchased and
installed, a bespoke projection screen was built and a specialised
lighting system was rigged up. Throughout this Alex was aware of
maintaining control of the sensory stimuli within the room and this
included the apparatus itself, which needed to be installed sensitively
so as not to become a distraction in itself.
In September 2005, the installation was complete and children were
invited to be introduced to the new space over a period of time
suitable for the individual to become comfortable with these new
surroundings. In the event the children settled into the new space
quickly and it was soon being used on a regular basis.
With the support of excellent staff, it was immediately apparent that
the sensory classroom provided a place of sanctuary and, when the
digital equipment was employed, one of engaging entertainment.
